Beyond Ticket Sales: 5 Ways for Theme Parks and Attractions to Grow Revenue

For theme parks and attractions, ticket sales will alwapys be a major source of revenue. But once a guest walks through the gates, the commercial opportunity has only just begun.

With rising operating costs and physical limits on how many visitors a venue can accommodate, revenue growth does not always have to come from increasing attendance. There is another important question operators can ask: How can we create more value from every guest who is already here?

From premium experiences and guest memories to digital engagement and new technology models, there are multiple ways to increase revenue per visitor while adding value to the overall experience.

For more than two decades, Pictureworks has worked with theme parks, attractions and destinations to turn guest experiences into commercial opportunities. Here are five areas operators can consider.

1. Turn Memorable Moments into Revenue

Every attraction is filled with moments worth remembering.

It could be a family taking a cable car together, the excitement of a theme park ride, reaching the top of an observation attraction or simply capturing a special day out.

The opportunity is to identify these moments and make it effortless for guests to capture, keep and share them. Imaging can turn an experience that is already happening into an incremental revenue opportunity, particularly when photography and video are integrated naturally into the guest journey.

This is where Pictureworks works with operators to identify the right capture points and build imaging into the experience itself, creating new commercial touchpoints without requiring an entirely new attraction.

In one Pictureworks’ site, a major cable car attraction in Asia, the commercial impact was seen within just three months. Across more than 1,000 participants, the integrated imaging experience achieved a 33.4% purchase rate, increased purchase rate by 6% and lifted average spend by 54%.

The opportunity may already be there. It is about finding the right moments and turning them into something guests value enough to purchase.

2. Create Experiences Guests Are Willing to Pay More For

A souvenir photograph has value because of the memory it represents. But there is an opportunity to go further by making the creation of that memory an experience in itself.

Guests increasingly look for experiences that are distinctive, personalized and shareable. This gives attractions the opportunity to move beyond conventional photography and create richer content that guests cannot easily reproduce themselves.

Pictureworks can work with operators to develop imaging experiences specifically around an attraction's environment, story or theme. Rather than applying the same photography concept everywhere, the experience can become an extension of the attraction itself.

At one of our sites, a major integrated entertainment resort in Macau, Pictureworks created a Virtual Film Shoot experience that places guests into a themed visual production. Instead of simply posing for a photograph, guests become part of the experience, creating content that is closely connected to the destination.

This approach can increase the perceived value of the final product while opening opportunities for premium packages and higher-value purchases.

The more unique the experience feels, the less the product becomes simply “a photo” and the more it becomes something guests are willing to pay for.

3. Make It Easier for Guests to Purchase

Creating something guests want is only half the equation. They also need to be able to purchase it easily.

Attractions are busy environments. Guests are moving between rides, shows, dining, retail and other experiences. If retrieving or purchasing their content requires too much effort, the opportunity can quickly disappear.

Every unnecessary step creates friction—and friction can mean lost revenue.

Pictureworks helps operators connect the imaging journey from capture through to retrieval, viewing, purchase and fulfilment through PictureAir™. Instead of treating each photography location as an isolated transaction, the technology can support a more connected experience across the attraction.

For the guest, that means making it easier to find and access their memories. For the operator, it creates a stronger opportunity to convert the interest that already exists into a purchase.

Technology does not always need to create a completely new revenue stream. Sometimes its greatest commercial impact comes from helping an existing revenue stream perform better.

4. Extend Monetization Opportunities Beyond the Physical Visit

Traditionally, many attraction purchases happen within a very limited window: the guest visits, experiences the attraction, makes purchases and leaves.

But the commercial relationship does not necessarily have to end at the exit.

Digital channels give attractions an opportunity to continue engaging guests after their visit. Photos and videos, personalized content, loyalty programmes, exclusive offers and other digital touchpoints can give visitors reasons to reconnect with the attraction once they have returned home.

This can extend the revenue window from a few hours at the venue to days, weeks or potentially even longer.

It can also create opportunities for repeat purchases, future visits and continued brand engagement. A memorable experience that guests share with friends and family can have value beyond the original transaction, helping keep the attraction visible to a much wider audience.

For operators, the opportunity is to think about the guest journey not simply as arrival to exit, but as a longer relationship that can begin before the visit and continue well after it.

5. Create New Revenue Opportunities Through Technology Licensing

For some attractions, increasing revenue through imaging does not necessarily mean outsourcing the entire operation.

Operators may already have their own photography teams, commercial operations and understanding of their guests. What they may not want is the cost, complexity and time required to develop and continuously maintain the technology behind the operation.

This creates another potential model: technology licensing.

PictureAir™ Technology Licensing

Pictureworks licenses its PictureAir™ technology to operators that want to build, manage or expand their own imaging business while retaining control of their operations and commercial model.

Instead of developing an imaging platform from the ground up, operators can use an established technology foundation that has been developed specifically for attraction environments.

This can allow attractions to move faster, reduce the resources required for technology development and focus their investment on the areas where they add the most value—such as their guests, content, operations and commercial strategy.

For Pictureworks, this also means partnerships do not have to follow a single model. Depending on what an attraction needs, Pictureworks can operate an imaging business, support specific parts of the guest imaging journey or provide the technology that enables an operator to run it themselves.

From More Visitors to More Value

Growing attendance will always be important for theme parks and attractions. But it should not be the only measure of growth.

There is significant revenue potential within the guest journey that already exists.

A memorable moment can become a product. A standard souvenir can become a premium experience. A complicated purchasing journey can become seamless. A guest relationship can continue after the visitor leaves. And an operator can create new capabilities without necessarily having to build the technology behind them from scratch.

Pictureworks works across these opportunities, combining more than two decades of attractions experience with the technology and operational capabilities to help partners turn guest engagement into stronger commercial performance.

Because revenue growth does not always require more visitors.

Sometimes, it starts by creating more value from every visit.
